Pittsburgh, Pa. − March 9, 2020 − Senator Lindsey M. Williams announced today that she will host a Policy Hearing entitled “Hearing from the Future: Student Voices on Education” on Thursday, March 26, 2020 from 9:30 am until 12:30 p.m. at Westinghouse Academy.

This policy hearing, which is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, will feature panels of high school students from across District 38, including students from public schools, brick and mortar charter schools, and cyber charter schools. Students will be offering testimony on topics important to them. “When it comes to education policy, legislators hear almost exclusively from adult experts on the subject, rather than students who live this experience every day,” explained Senator Williams. “Our students have amazing insight into these processes and this hearing is designed to elevate that insight and their voices.”

Senator Williams has been meeting with students to explain the policy hearing process, including helping them choose what topics they would like to focus on. Participating groups of students will work together to submit written testimony on their chosen topic. Additionally, one student from each school will present oral testimony and answer questions from Senators. “I’m constantly impressed by the caliber of the questions that students are asking and the insight they show when addressing important issues,” said Senator Williams. “I can’t wait for them to share their views and influence how we craft education policy on a multitude of topics going forward.”
