Pittsburgh, Pa. − May 16, 2019 − Senator Lindsey M. Williams announced today that Deer Lakes School District and Shaler Area School District have been awarded mini-grants from Governor Wolf’s School Breakfast Initiative.

These grants can be used by schools to start or expand an “alternative serving method” of breakfast, such as grab-and-go, breakfast in the classroom, or a second chance serving during study hall. Schools that are awarded grant funding through this program are required to make breakfast available to all students.

“School administrators throughout my district have expressed their concerns that the number of students participating in the free and reduced breakfast program drops after elementary school, not because students are no longer eligible for the program, but because of the stigma involved,” said Senator Williams. “This grant funding will allow the Deer Lakes and Shaler School Districts to explore ways to get breakfast to more students while not singling out those whose families might be struggling.”

Through the Breakfast Initiative Mini-Grant Program, Deer Lakes Middle School and High School will each receive $3,570. Shaler Area High School will receive $4,718; Shaler Area Middle School will receive $3,384.
